Ask HN: Is AI a Powerdrill?

Powerdrills put in the hand of a country bumpkin in the early 20th century were pretty amazing, but they wound up being just an extension of intention.

A person puts their finger on the trigger. But he needs some project to apply this to (something he's building) and a screw or drill (the solution he wants to apply). If we expected powerdrills to do anything on their own, we would get disappointing results.

    I suppose logically, any tool that lacks freewill is just a tool. So in that instance I believe you are correct.

    Of course the hard part here is the definition of free will.

    I think AI is more of a radial arm saw. Very flexible, adaptable, capable, but very dangerous in untrained hands.
